Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov proclaimed Feb. 18 the Day of Diplomats.

At a recent meeting with the country's diplomatic corps, Berdimuhammedov reviewed new approaches to implement the country's foreign policy, an official Turkmen source said.

Berdimuhammedov stressed that strengthening relations with neighboring countries is a top priority.

Azerbaijan borders Turkmenistan across the Caspian Sea.

The Turkmen Embassy in Baku was restored after Berdimuhammedov's election. A series of summits have also been held to facilitate negotiations on cooperation on the Caspian.

Berdimuhammedov instructed the Turkmen mission in Baku to "develop and strengthen fraternal, friendly relations with Azerbaijan."

Relevant orders were given to the Turkmen embassies in Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

In February, Berdimuhammedov visited Tehran. Tomorrow he will pay an official visit to Tashkent.

Last week, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev approved a package of agreements signed during an official visit to Ashgabat on Nov. 28. The package includes an agreement on the Azerbaijani-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, an agreement to organize direct international railway-ferry communication through the Baku and Turkmenbashi ports, and an agreement on educational cooperation.
