Azerbaijan completes technical security of upcoming municipal elections: CEC

Web-cameras have been installed in 500 polling stations in accordance with the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission's (CEC) decision, CEC Head Mazahir Panahov said. This number covers about 10 percent of all election commissions across the country and that is enough, he added.

Web-cameras have been installed in 500 polling stations in accordance with the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission's (CEC) decision, CEC Head Mazahir Panahov said. This number covers about 10 percent of all election commissions across the country and that is enough, he added.

About 289 web-cameras were installed in 37 districts of the country, including the Absheron region, 189 in Baku and 25 in Nakhchivan. Those desiring can observe the election process through the Internet, Panahov added.

About 50 percent of Vodofon subscribers will have an opportunity to observe the elections through the 3G technology, Communications and IT Minister Ali Abbasov said. "The ministry plans to use in maximum this technology in the next election.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 23, 2009. About 15,682 members are planned to be elected to 1,718 municipalities. 

Azerbaijan has registered about 32,000 candidates for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates refer to 30 political parties.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.
