Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 3 / Trend T. Hajiyev /
The chairmen of two Azerbaijani opposition parties discussed the idea of creating the "People's Parliament" at a meeting today.
The meeting was held between the heads of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA), Ali Kerimli and Sardar Jalaloglu, the DPA told Trend.
The political situation in the country, issues concerning the results of the parliamentary elections and the opposition's integration were discussed at the meeting.
Views were exchanged on problems associated with other spheres of public life.
The main purpose of the meeting was to exchange views, DPA Chairman Sardar Jalaloglu told Trend. No concrete decisions have been made due to the meeting, he said.
Meanwhile, he said the idea of creating the "People's Parliament" was proposed due to the results of the parliamentary elections.
"I think that we need a comprehensive approach to such issues," he said. "Perhaps, it would be better if the 'People's Parliament' is considered to be a separate element. Each idea taken separately loses its meaning. We think the proposal must be reviewd comprehensively."
Azerbaijan held the elections on Nov. 7.
The voter turnout hit about 50.14 percent (roughly 2.48 million voters) in Azerbaijan, the Central Election Commission's Elections Information Center told Trend.
The CEC reported that 690 candidates were running for the parliamentary elections.
Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies. Previous parliamentary elections were held in November 2005.
The PFPA and DPA were defeated.
Baku hosted a forum for opposition and independent candidates who took part in the elections on Nov. 23.
The forum initiated by the PFPA-Musavat political bloc was attended by independent candidates and candidates of the opposition Azerbaijan National Independence Party, Classic Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Azadlig Party, Democratic World of Azerbaijan Party and the Azerbaijani People's Party. The meeting discussed the elections and the post-election situation.
A proposal was voiced to establish an alternative to the Azerbaijani parliament, tentatively referred to as the "People's Parliament."
