Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 6 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Environment Protection and Natural Resources Minister Goga Khachidze will attend a summit on climate change in Cancun, Mexico. The president will arrive in Mexico today. His visit will run until Dec. 11.
Khachidze said Copenhagen hosted a similar summit last year, which failed to result in any important decisions.
He added that the obligations set forth by the Kyoto Protocol will expire in 2012, and a new action plan must be developed outlining financial assistance for developing countries. According to a decision by the EU and the United States, a $100 billion fund will be established. The finances will later be redistributed among developing countries.
Cancun is hosting the Conference of Parties of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10.
Cancun will bring together about 15,000 participants. Talks are held in the first week of the conference within working groups, and high-level meetings will begin on Dec. 7.
