The UN is one of the most important organizations for Azerbaijan, rector of Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA), Deputy Foreign Minister Hafiz Pashayev said on Friday at the event Azerbaijan and the United Nations: 20 years of cooperation and future prospects.

Azerbaijan was experiencing hard and difficult times when the country became a member of the United Nations, he said. The problems of Azerbaijan were discussed at the UN then and four resolutions on the Nagorno-Karabakh were adopted.

Azerbaijan became a member of the UN Security Council during the past 20 years, Pashayev added.

"It is the success of our diplomacy," he said.

UN Resident Coordinator Antonius Broek conveyed congratulations on UN membership.

The progress made over the past 20 years is impressive if take into account the difficulties of Azerbaijan during the first years of independence and nearly one million refugees and internally displaced persons, he said.

He noted that the UN has focused on the provision of humanitarian assistance to Azerbaijan at that time. The UN has always supported Azerbaijan in strengthening the independence, Broek said.

Azerbaijan's election to the UN Security Council is a success of the country's foreign policy, and it is appreciated by the international community, the UN official said.

Azerbaijan becomes an important country in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, he said.
