Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received the delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
At the meeting, the sides exchanged views on issues of human rights and freedom of speech, they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in these areas.
Mammadyarov wished the guests a happy International Human Rights Day and spoke about reforms carried out in Azerbaijan in the field of democracy, human rights and freedom of speech, as well as about achieved success.
The minister also spoke about the high level of Internet freedom in Azerbaijan.
Thomas Melia said the U.S. is interested in cooperation with Azerbaijan in these areas and he noted the importance of further work in this direction.
Elmar Mammadyarov briefed guests about the final stage of negotiations on the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and stressed that Yerevan evades negotiations under various pretexts.
