Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev and Spanish Minister of Defence Pedro Morenes Alvaro de Eulatella met in Baku, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

Abiyev spoke in detail about the way passed by the Azerbaijani armed forces after gaining the independence, the positive results of expanding the relations with NATO and bringing the army in line with the modern standards.

Colonel-General informed the Spanish counterpart about the military-political situation in the region and the causes of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Abiyev stressed that despite the Azerbaijani lands are under occupation for 20 years, Armenia does not abandon its policy.

"Therefore, Azerbaijan has to strengthen the armed forces," the minister said. "Four resolutions adopted by the UN, have not been implemented yet. The activity of the Minsk Group is ineffectual."

Spanish minister said that non-execution of the UN resolutions can lead to serious consequences in the future. He stressed that he supports the implementation of the resolutions and added that the UN resolutions aimed at establishing peace, must be executed.

The need for signing an agreement on military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Spain was stressed following the meeting.

Chief of General Staff of Spanish Armed Forces, Admiral Fernando García Sánchez and the ambassadors of both countries also attended the meeting.
