GUAM and the Great Silk Road International Youth Union have signed a memorandum of cooperation.

The document was signed in Baku by GUAM Secretary General Valeri Chechelashvili and Chairman of the Great Silk Road Union, MP Fuad Muradov on Tuesday.

Cooperation between the two organisations will cover such areas as the economy and humanitarian sphere and in particular the organisation of business meetings, cultural and sports events, Muradov told journalists after signing a memorandum on Tuesday.

According to him, the aim of cooperation is to attract the GUAM member states to closer interaction in the international arena.

GUAM's authority in the world is growing daily as an increasing number of countries and organisations become interested in working with the organisation, Valery Chechelashvili said.

The signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the Great Silk Road International Youth Union is one more step in this direction, the GUAM Secretary General said.

GUAM was established by several post-Soviet countries in 1997 during the EU presidential summit at Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organisation and left four years later. A decision was made to rename GUAM 'The Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM', at the body's first summit in Kiev in 2006.
