Baku, Azerbaijan, June 14
By Anakhanum Idayatova - Trend:

Egypt and Azerbaijan have a permanent political dialogue, Suzanne Jamil, Egyptian ambassador to Azerbaijan, said in an interview with Trend June 14.

Jamil stressed that the Egypt-Azerbaijan cooperation has been always strong.

"Egypt's foreign policy remained unchanged," Jamil said, adding that Egypt wants to expand cooperation with all countries.

"A number of high level visits will be made from Egypt to Azerbaijan in 2016," she said. "The details have not been disclosed yet."

The ambassador also expressed support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Egypt supports the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and also supports Azerbaijan in this issue," she said. "We hope for speedy peaceful settlement of the conflict."

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
