US has long-standing partnership with Azerbaijan in security (UPDATE)

The US has a very long-standing partnership with the government of Azerbaijan in security issues, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Carpenter said Nov.1 in Baku.

“I have had a very good set of meetings with defense minister, deputy defense minister,” noted the US military official adding that the sides discussed long-standing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US.

Carpenter noted that the US-Azerbaijan partnership in security is “of the most important pillars of our bilateral relations”.

“We have spent over $60 million on security cooperation in Azerbaijan since 2002,” added Carpenter.

He said also that over 25 years of Azerbaijan’s independence, the US and Azerbaijan have had a partnership on a range of issues, including counterterrorism, cyber security, maritime security and others.

Carpenter also thanked Azerbaijan for the contributions of its peacekeeping mission to the resolute support to Afghanistan.

He added that the US is interested in long-standing peace and stability in Azerbaijan.
