BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 3. France blocked all issues regarding Mayotte's occupation in international organizations, Head of the Baku Initiative Group Abbas Abbasov told reporters, Trend reports.
"The French government conducted artificial and illegal referendums in 1976 and occupied the island of Mayotte. Since 1995, the French government has blocked all issues related to the Comoros and the occupation of Mayotte in international organizations," Abbasov said.
He mentioned that, after 19 long years, the Baku Initiative Group pulled out all the stops and organized an international conference to tackle this issue head-on and drive home the importance of the UN resolutions to the international community.
"The Baku Initiative Group will continue to call for the implementation of UN resolutions. We will always support these principles of international law," he added.
An international conference, organized by the Baku Initiative Group and dedicated to the French-occupied island of Mayotte, is taking place in Baku.
The conference titled "The illegal occupation of Mayotte Island by France, Union of the Comoros" is attended by public and political figures from Mayotte, representatives of the academic community, human rights activists, heads of non-governmental organizations, members of political parties fighting against the occupation of Mayotte Island by France and striving for the return of Mayotte to the Union of the Comoros, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan.
The conference is discussing the history of French colonization of the Comoros, France's occupation of Mayotte island and the resulting damage to the Comorians, the economic and geopolitical goals of France's colonial policy in the region, and the opinions of international organizations on Mayotte's place in the Union of the Comoros.
