High level meeting on re-run parliamentary elections held in Baku

A high level meeting to discuss re-run parliamentary elections to Milli Mejlis was held at the initiative of Council of Europe (CE) and international Fund of Electoral Systems (IFES) in Baku on April 29. Head of the presidential apparatus, Ali Hasanov, local MPs, head of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Mazahir Panahov and other officials took part at the meeting.

Head of the PACE observational mission, Leo Platvoet, foreign ambassadors, CE members and Venetian commission also participated at the meeting.

Platvoet stated that international organizations are optimistic about future re-run elections and there is still time to introduce changes into electoral code of the country. Government should modify the electoral code, and article 170. 2 in particular, PACE representative said.

The given article accepts election results if violations do not exceed 40%.

Besides, the CE action plan will be implemented not only during elections but also after them, Platvoet said.

CEC head, in his turn informed participants about the work carried out by CEC, including educational works to inform the population about importance of the given elections, he said, stressing that CEC is open to cooperate will all international organizations.
