The American Senator, the Chairman of the Committee on External Affairs of the US Senate Richard G. Lugar to arrive in Azerbaijan at the weekend, Jonathan Hanick, the Chief of Press-Service of the US Embassy to Baku told Trend today.
The program of his visit has not adjusted yet, but it is expected that he will meet officials, hold a meeting with MPs in the Milli Majlis, and meet representatives of the civil society. The Senator is about to hold meetings with different strata of the Azerbaijani society to obtain as much information about the country as possible, added Jonathan Hanick.
It should be pointed out that R. Lugar visited Azerbaijan in August 2005. In May 2006 he backed the nomination of Anne Dersi, the existing US Ambassador to Azerbaijan during discussions in the Senate.
Then during his speech he stated that such oil and gas-rich country like Azerbaijan has a big potential to increase its export of energy. According to him, US should continue rendering of its aid to Azerbaijan in the opening of the South Corridor for oil and gas transit to Europe, as well as support works in the direction of providing of transparency in the energy sector, and development of oil sector of the economy.
