Azerbaijani Supreme Court  did not Justify Former Health Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Then Azerbaijani Supreme Court did not justify Ali Insanov, the former Health Minister of Azerbaijan. The Supreme Court chaired by judge Vidadi Huseynov, considered the appeal brought by Insanov and former officials of the Ministry on 16 January.

Insanov was detained in October, 2005. He was accused of attempting a coup d'etat and causing mass riots. By the decision made by the Azerbaijani Court on Heinous Crimes dated 20 April, Ali Insanov was found guilty of appropriation of property and abuse of power and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment. At present he is being held in Bail Isolation Cell 1 of the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan. He is demanding to be transferred to the Patient Care Institution of the Penitentiary Service. Medical examinations have proved that he suffers from a vertebral hernia. 

The Supreme Court remained upheld the decision made by Baku Appeal Court. Under the decision, the terms for Parviz Kazimov and Fakhraddin Abbasov, accused of misappropriation, was decreased from seven years to five years imprisonment.

Taking into consideration the house arrest of one year, one month and 23 days, Akif Maharramov will serve a sentence of seven years and six months. Alexander Umrashkin was sentenced to eleven months and two days imprisonment.

The court verdict towards the other prisoners did not change.

Togrul Babayev, Insanov's attorney, stated to Trend that they would appeal to the European Court.
