Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Sunday called for plans to modernize the country after an accident in a Siberian dam, which killed at least 72 people, Xinhua reported.
It is the Soviet-era legacy that Russia has been using to produce electricity and establish new enterprises, Medvedev said in a TV interview aired on Sunday.
"This is the key issue we face today, this question of what kind of future we want to build," Medvedev said, according to the full text of the interview published on the Kremlin website.
The Sayano-Shushenskaya dam in southern Siberia was engulfed by a massive flood on Aug. 17. The accident, which killed at least 72, has shut down the country's biggest hydropower plant, causing a severe energy shortfall in the region.
Medvedev said he has instructed the government to ensure that proper compensation is made to the victims' families. He also urged a thorough investigation into the accident.
