The fight against fake news is now relevant to all countries of the world, regardless of the size of their territory and level of development, Director General of the Belarus Today media holding Dmitry Zhuk said at the a panel, held within the VI Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

The general director noted with regret that fake news has become a part of our life.

False information can have a real impact on events and become tangible in everyday life, he added.

Further, Dmitry Zhuk gave an example from the Belarusian media space when an unwary and irresponsible Facebook post can be reprinted first by a number of local and foreign media, ultimately influencing people's decisions and actions. Thus, initially false information gets spread and show a motivating influence on people's behavior.

The general director of the media holding urged the information providers not to forget about journalistic ethics and the need to verify the authenticity of the facts.

"A real journalist is responsible for what he writes, for completeness, accuracy of quotations and, most importantly, a journalist is responsible for reputation. The media outlet for which the journalist works is responsible for him/her and for reputation in society," Zhuk said.

In the case of social networks, from where, as a rule, all fakes come up, there is no such responsibility in principle, he added.

The VI International Humanitarian Forum the theme of which is “Shaping a New World and a New Humanity: Creativity and Human Development”, began its work in Baku on Oct. 25. More than 580 people including 416 foreign guests from 86 countries and 24 international organizations, participate in this two-day forum.
