Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / An appeal was made to the President of Azerbaijan for the release of OMONs (special police divisions). The Chairman of the Committee for Human Rights Protection of OMON, Famil Suleymanov, said that due to the March events in 1995, 340 OMONs and 400 people who were not members to OMON were instituted to the criminal responsibility. Nearly 100 prosecuted OMONs served their sentences and were released. The remaining OMONs were pardoned by the State Head. Presently eight OMONs serve their sentence in prisons. The legal observers have appealed to the President for their release.
