Protest Action to Begin to Protect Arrested Azerbaijani Journalist

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / The Editor-in-Chief of Musavat Newspaper, Rauf Arifoglu, said that a Protection Committee comprising of 35 people was created to protect the rights of the Editor-in-Chief of Gundelik Azerbaijan-Real Azerbaijan newspaper, Eynulla Fatullayev, who was arrested on 20 April according to the decision of the Yasamal District Court.

Immediately after the arrest of Eynulla Fatullayev in the Court hall, a meeting of the Union of Editor-in-Chiefs took place. A decision was made to create a Protection Committee and it is planned to hold protest and hunger actions. The Protection Committee includes six parliamentarians, law-observers, heads of the political parties, non-governmental organizations, journalist organizations and editor-in-chiefs of newspapers.

The Court session over the law suit of the Head of the Center for Protection of Refugees and IDPs, Tatyana Chaladze, against the Editor-in-Chief of Gundelik Azerbaijan-Real Azerbaijan newspapers, Eynulla Fatullayev, continued on 20 April. Fatullayev called himself as innocent at the previous court sessions. He stressed that the opinion in the article Karabakh Diary does not belong to him, but his interviewees. The Yasamal District Court sentenced Fatullayev to two and a half-year imprisonment. The journalist was arrested at the Court hall.
