BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 11. The EU and its partners should jointly develop a strategy to prevent possible cyberattacks on the power grids, Tengiz Pkhaladze, a non-resident senior fellow at the European Center for International Political Economy (ECIPE), told Trend.

Meanwhile, the recent cyberattack on Ukraine’s power grid gives reason to believe that another attack may occur on the European interconnector.

“Security today has different dimensions, and cyber-security is the most important because every country today depends on cybersphere. What we saw in Ukraine this is the testing of a new kind of warfare,” Pkhaladze said.

According to the expert, the future of the EU depends on a wider Europe, where the Eastern Partnership should be considered first.

“This is a challenge for every country of the EU, including the EU partner-countries, especially the Eastern Partnership. For example, Azerbaijan plays a significant role in the energy security of the EU,” Pkhaladze noted.

“Today the world is more prepared for this kind of threat. We have significant engagement in the countermeasures, not just countries, but also private companies, such as SpaceX’s Starlink, which contributed a lot to the global cybersecurity,” he added.

The expert noted that this is a global challenge, where the common threat assessments should be made, and an elaborate strategy should be developed, which will secure not only the EU but also its partners.
