Azerbaijan’s food imports increase in value

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 18. Azerbaijani food imports increased in value terms by 3.42 percent ($40.8 million) from January through July 2023 - to $1.2 billion, Trend reports.

According to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, in the reporting period of 2023, the country imported 24,280 tons of meat (an increase of 3.08 percent) worth $46.9 million dollars (an increase of 3.08 percent), 7,060 tons of milk (an increase of 23.01 percent) - $14.8 million (an increase of 58.49 percent), 9,740 tons dairy products (decline by 18.97 percent) - $54.1 million (decrease by 20.92 percent), 198,190 tons of vegetables and fruits (decrease by 14.55 percent) - $132.7 million (a decline of 6.53 percent), 7,220 tons of tea (a decline of 14.32 percent) - more than $38.3 million (a decrease of 9.23 percent).

In addition, Azerbaijan also imported more than 679,940 tons of wheat, corn and rice worth over $218.3 million.

The import of vegetable fats and oils amounted to 77,310 tons worth more than $103.5 million.

Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover increased by 0.91 percent ($274.5 million), from $30.1 billion to $30.3 billion, from January through July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

According to the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, out of the total foreign trade turnover, exports accounted for $20.8 billion, which is $1.8 billion (7.92 percent) less than the same period last year. The share of exports in foreign trade turnover totaled 68.5 percent, compared to 75.07 percent a year earlier.

In addition, Azerbaijan's imports in the reporting period increased by $2.1 billion (27.52 percent), from $7.5 billion to about $9.6 billion. The share of imports in foreign trade turnover amounted to 31.5 percent, compared to 24.93 percent a year earlier.

As a result, in the reporting period, the balance of foreign trade turnover, remaining positive, decreased by more than $3.9 billion (25.55 percent) on an annual basis, to $11.2 billion against $15.1 billion in the reporting period of 2022.
