BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 18. TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed agreements to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands, in line with TotalEnergies’ 2030 goal to decarbonize hydrogen use in its European refineries, Trend reports.

The projects will produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, primarily powered by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, developed by TotalEnergies and RWE. These initiatives aim to reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons per year, contributing to European renewable energy targets.

The two companies will form a 50/50 joint venture to build and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, with a target production of 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. The electrolyzer, expected to be operational in 2029, will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tons per year. The project carries an investment of around 600 million euros, with additional funding sought through European and national subsidy programs.

Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for its Antwerp platform. This part of the project will utilize renewable electricity from the OranjeWind farm, with a completion target of 2027. The green hydrogen will help cut CO2 emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tons annually.

These projects mark a significant step in TotalEnergies’ strategy to decarbonize its industrial operations and support Europe's transition to a low-carbon future.
