( dpa ) - British aero engine maker Rolls-Royce is to cut up to 2,300 jobs at plants in Europe and the United States in an attempt to reduce costs and improve efficiency in view of high raw material prices and a weak dollar, the company said Friday.

The cuts will affect the company's operations in Britain, the US, Germany and the Nordic countries, the firm said.

Managerial, professional and clerical staff are to bear the brunt of the job losses.

Rolls-Royce employs about 39,500 people in 50 countries, with about 23,300 employed in Britain.
