Record Grain Harvest Expected in Azerbaijan’s Region

Azerbaijan, Sheki, 20 May / Trend corr E. Guliyev/ Record grain harvest is expected in the Sheki region in Azerbaijan this year, Javanshir Gurbanov, head of the Sheki Agricultural Administration, said on 20 May.

According to Gurbanov, 150,000 tons of barley and wheat are expected to be produced this year. About 50,600 hectares were sown with wheat and 16,000 hectares with barley.

Agrolizing Sheki branch involved 64 combine harvesters to the area, which meets only 20-25% of the technics requirement. Additional machines are expected to be supplied.

Azerbaijani Agricultural Ministry forecasts 2.3-2.4mln tons of grain production for 2008. Azerbaijan's annual grain demand comprises 3mln tons, with 1.5mln being bread-grain.

Sheki is located 352km north-west of Baku.
