The Azersun Holding plans to commission a paper recycling plant by late 2009, Azesun President Abdolbari Gezal said. Earlier the plant was expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2009.

Besides covering the country's paper demands, the plant will play a significant role in staving off environmental contamination.

The plant's construction will cost 30 million euro, a company source said earlier.

The plant will be located in Sumgayit.

The plant will be capable of recycling up to 200 tons of used paper per day, or 60,000 tons per year.

The national paper industry will quickly expand after the plant is launched.

Currently, 2.4 tons of wood, 440 tons of water and 7,600 kilovolts of electricity are required to produce one ton of paper. As the cost of these materials rise, so will prices on paper. The plant will prevent the increase in costs and allow Azerbaijan to maintain a leading position in the regional paper industry.

The plant will meet the paper demands of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Dagestan. Thirty percent of the product will be consumed by Azerbaijan and 70 percent by neighboring countries.

Azersun Holding was founded in 1992. The company specializes in tea and vegetable oil processing and packing, as well as trade, distribution, construction, banking, insurance, paper and paperboard production, canned meat and vegetables and cargo transportation and storage.
