Uzbek government releases 2008 stats

The Uzbek Cabinet of Ministers held a meeting on last year's economic statistics and priorities for 2009.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov read a report at the meeting, the Presidential Administration told Trend .

"The president said the socio-economic development program strengthened the country's economic growth rate and fostered positive changes to resolve long-term issues," the administration said.

The country's GDP increased 9 percent in 2008.

Investments into the country increased 28.3 percent, including direct foreign investments and loans.

Small businesses and private entrepreneurship also developed dynamically last year.

Foreign trade with developing Asian markets is on the rise.

"The government also adopted an anti-crisis program to neutralize the effects of the global economic crisis," Karimov said.
