The number of profitable banks in Azerbaijan was 38 in August 2009. The number is two more than in August 2008, but declined by one compared to the previous month.
Total profit of the banking system increased by 21.8 percent as compared to 1 September 2008 and 1.1 percent - to the beginning of the year, reaching 186.69 million manat. In August, the total profits of banks increased by 15.2 percent.
The number of unprofitable banks increased by one compared to July, but remained the same compared to early 2009. Seven banks lost 8.98 million manat, which is 39 percent less than the figure for Sept. 1, 2008.
