Transit and tourism are main purposes of Iranian citizens visiting Turkey

Transit and tourism are main purposes of visit of Iranian citizens traveling Turkey in 2010, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

In 2010, 1,760,733 Iranian citizens visited Turkey, the purpose of visit of about 38.78 percent of them (682,797 people) was transit, 35 percent of them (616,423 people) - travel and leisure.

About 149,670 people visited the country to meet with family and friends, 171,444 people - trade, 88,205 people - work (conferences, meetings, etc.) 12,822 people - treatment, 15,600 people - education, 1,571 people - religious purposes and 33,879 people - for other purposes.

Iranians who visited Turkey in 2010 were mainly entrepreneurs, hired workers and housewives.

About 493,408 people are hired workers, 527,385 - entrepreneurs, 55,764 - unemployed, job seekers, 429,774 - housewives, 127,452 - students and pupils, 104,283 - pensioners and 22,667 - the other categories.

Over 38 percent of Iranian citizens visiting Turkey are men aged 25 to 44 years. These are 671,737 people.

298,839 people are men aged from 45 to 64 years, 267,380 - women aged 25 to 44, 243,229 - women aged 45 to 64 years, 89,035 - men aged 15 to 24 years, 72,700 - men over 65 years, 64,780 - women aged 15 to 24 years and 53,032 - women over 65 years.

According to the TurkStat, 1,760,733 Iran citizens visited Turkey, while in 2009 the figure was 1,291,592 people.

Based on the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry's data, some 1.885 million Iranian citizens visited Turkey in 2010, which is 36.28 percent more than the figure in 2009. In 2009, 1.383 million Iranian citizens visited Turkey.

The figure comprises 6.58 percent of the total number of foreigners, who visited Turkey in 2010. The figure was 5.11 percent in 2009.

The total number of foreign citizens, who visited the country in 2010, amounted to 28.632 million people, which is 5.74 percent more than in 2009. During this period, mainly citizens of Germany, Russia, Great Britain and Iran visited the country.

In December 2010, 100,367 Iranian citizens visited Turkey (8.61 percent of the total number), whereas in December 2009, Turkey was visited by 93,021 Iranian citizens (7.59 percent).
