Some 32 Iranian companies participate in SIAL Paris 2012

Iranian exhibitors from 32 companies have taken part in the Paris international food exhibition, SIAL Paris 2012.

Around 140,000 professional visitors from the food industry and 5,900 French and international exhibitors from 160 countries have participated in SIAL Paris 2012, the IRNA News Agency reported.

Pistachio, saffron, dates, raisin, almond, dried nuts and fruits, and dried tea were the main items presented by Iranian companies.

The exhibition ranges from raw products to ready-made food and drinks, kitchen equipment and information on food export.

The five-day exhibition kicked off on October 21.

Iran is the Middle East and North Africa's greatest producer of garden products, and ranks eighth or ninth in the world.

Iran exported fruits worth over $2.17 million in the previous calendar year, which ended on March 19. The fruit export value is expected to rise in the current calendar year compared to the previous year, the Fars News Agency reported.

"Iran also produced 17 tons of garden products previous year, which is expected to rise by at least one ton this year," he added.

Iran ranked between eighth and tenth in global fruit production in different years. In the production of pomegranates and pistachios Iran ranks first, in dates and cherries, third, fourth in the production of apples and walnuts, and, seventh in producing citrus fruits. Some 50 kinds of fruits are grown in Iran. The record for pomegranate production is 100 tons in a hectare of land, 146 tons for apples and 70 tons for oranges.
