Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadow signed a decree approving the Regulation on licensing road transportation, an official Turkmen source stated.

The document is approved in accordance with Turkmenistan's law on licensing certain types of activities, as well as for fulfilling the presidential decree dated Feb.27 2009 'On the organisation of works on licensing in Turkmenistan'.

In June the country amended the law on licensing road transport. These licenses are issued for three years, although their validity can be shortened or extended in accordance with the legislation. The document also regulates the suspension of the licence.

The licence grants the right to perform certain types of transport activities. An individual who obtained a transport licence has to undertake it personally without using a third party, or hired drivers.

Following the amendments, the licence permits the carriage of cargo (other than dangerous) and forwarding services in Turkmenistan and abroad.

In order to implement the law and protect the interests of Turkmen citizens requirements and conditions have been introduced that secure the liability of those licensed to perform such operations.

They are required to match international standards of vehicles, as well as regulatory standards and technical acts which must comply with international agreements of Turkmenistan related to vehicles.
