Baku may turn into an international hub for postal shipments from Asia to Europe, Director General of the Universal Postal Union Bishar Hussein told reporters in Baku.
He made the remarks Dec. 2 during the Bakutel 2016, the 22nd Azerbaijan International Exhibition and Conference on Telecommunications and Information Technologies.
Postal technologies are used for online shopping, he said.
Goods and services from the Far East, China, Indonesia, and all the other countries with tiger economies can now be delivered to Baku and then to the rest of Europe, he noted, adding that this business may bring in trillions of US dollars.
“I am very much encouraged by what I have seen here in Azerbaijan,” he said. “Postal organization is really very advanced and is providing good services.”
“Post office is modernized here,” he noted. “We are buying the same technologies to provide services.”
The 26th Universal Postal Union Congress was held in Istanbul Sept. 20-Oct. 7 to come up with a global postal strategy which envisages using modern technologies to be able to provide best services to the citizens, Hussein added.
Director general of the Universal Postal Union noted that he is very proud that Azerbaijan has advanced a lot in this direction.
