Since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018), fishermen from the Iranian province of Gilan have caught 1,385 tons of bony fish, said Eshagh Shabani, Director General of Gilan Fisheries Department, Trend reports referring to ISNA news agency.

According to Shabani, this suggests that, when compared to the same period last year, fishing increased by 90 percent.

He added that the value of the fish caught makes up 536 billion rials (app. $12.7 million).

Marking the early fishing season as the reason for an increase in fish catch, Shabani added that mugil (a.k.a. mullet) (826 tons) and Caspian kutum (a.k.a. Caspian white fish)(529 tons) were caught the most.

The Director General also stressed that approximately 4,000 fishermen work in 52 provincial fishing cooperatives.
