Cargo transportation is up in Azerbaijan

Some 50.9 million tons of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan in January-March 2019, which is 2.1 percent more than in the same period last year, Trend reports referring to the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan.

In the total volume of goods transported in January-March 2019, 59.3 percent of goods were transported by vehicles, 30.7 percent - by pipelines, 6.9 percent - by railway, 3 percent - by ships, and 0.1 percent - by planes.

In the reporting period, as many as 460.7 million people used the passenger transport, which is 1.3 percent more than in the same period last year. The majority (87.7 percent) of the passengers commuted by vehicles, 12.1 percent - by metro, and the remainder - by other types of transport.

In January-March 2019, some 3.5 million tons of cargo were carried and 17,100 passengers were transported by the railways, which is 8.2 and 16.8 percent respectively more than in the same period last year.

On the average, the number of loaded railcars amounted to 269 per day and unloaded – to 394 per day. The average daily load of railcars in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 10,500 tons, in the western direction – 4,300 tons, and in the southern direction – 0,500 tons.

About 1.54 million tons of cargo were transported by ships, which is 27.4 percent less than in 2018. Some 30.6 percent of the transported cargo fell on oil cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in January-March 2019 amounted to 2.09 million tons.

During the reporting period, approximately 30.2 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles, which by 2.3 percent exceeds the same figure in 2018 .

The volume of passenger transportation by vehicles amounted to 403.9 million people (an increase of 1.6 percent compared to 2018). Some 96 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 4 percent - by taxi.

The volume of passenger traffic by metro amounted to 55.6 million people, a decrease of 1.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

In the 1Q 2019, some 477,700 passengers traveled by planes, which is 0.4 percent more than in 2018, and 0.2 percent of the transportation fell on the private sector. Cargo transportation by planes decreased by 10.8 percent compared to the same period last year and amounted to 45,300 tons.
