National guidelines to produce high-quality honey presented in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Presentation of the publication "Georgian National Guidelines for the Production of Quality Honey" was held at Expo Georgia on November 14, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

The guidelines are based on practical experience and give honey producers recommendations on how to produce high-quality honey which can be exported to the EU market.

Georgian small and medium-sized enterprises have had the opportunity to export honey to 500 million people on the EU market for almost three years now.

"One of the main challenges for exporting products to the EU is ensuring that the right standards are met. I hope that the National Guidelines presented today will inspire honey producers to follow great example of the first exporters of Georgian honey to the EU market, whose honey quality meets and even exceeds EU standards, and to produce safe and healthy products for Georgian and EU customers alike,” noted Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia Carl Hartzell.

"We are glad that in close cooperation within the EU-GIZ project, a guideline document has been developed, which will, hopefully, assist beekeepers and honey producers in the production of high-quality products,” said Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Khatia Tsilosani.

"This work brought us to the first export of Georgian premium honey to the EU. We have proven that Georgian honey can be competitive on the European market and sells at very attractive prices,” noted Program Director for GIZ Private Sector Development Katja Kammerer.

Within the EU-GIZ project, Georgian honey under the brand of Tapli, which includes high quality honey of local Georgian producers, has been introduced to the European market.

The guidelines have been developed by German and Georgian specialists under the EU-funded project on SME Development and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTA) lainched in Georgia.

German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) is a German development agency headquartered in Bonn that provides services in the field of international development.
