Milk production decreases in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 12

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Milk production decreases in Georgia, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

Milk production decreased by 4.8 percent in Georgia in the third quarter of 2019 compared to the same period of 2018 and amounted to 160.3 million liters.

As reported, almost all dairy products in Georgia are produced with the use of powdered milk imported mainly from Iran. In 2015, Georgia introduced regulations obliging producers to indicate the use of milk powder and vegetable oils on the label, but it does not work efficiently, because Georgian farmers produce homemade cheese in large quantities without any labels.

At the same time, in November 2019, the number of cattle has declined by 2. 1 percent year-on-year to 902,100 heads. The production of natural milk also has decreased to 160.3 million liters, which is 4.8 percent less than in 2016.

Experts say that Georgia milk production decline will continue since most cows are kept in small farms with two-three cows. In the current situation, the natural milk production is economically unprofitable.

As reported, to develop this sector of the economy, the farms must be enlarged, but due to complex problems, no one has yet been able to solve them.
