USAID ready to support  Georgian agricultural sector

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is ready to support the Georgian agricultural sector, said USAID Mission Director in Georgia Peter Wiebler, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

He made the remark at the meeting with Georgian Minister of Agriculture Levan Davitashvili.

Davitashvili thanked the US government and USAID for the support provided to Georgia during this difficult period and stressed the importance of developing partnership between the countries.

The parties discussed the importance of an effective priority-based economic recovery plan and then issues related to circular economy, protected areas, food security, and underlined the importance of supporting small and medium-sized businesses.

According to Wiebler, in the current situation, from the point of view of supplying the country with food and controlling the level of stocks, the ministry of agriculture have a special responsibility. The USAID mission director emphasized that the ministry is effectively managing this task, and also promised to render necessary support.

USAID began operating in Georgia in 1992. For 26 years, the American people have provided over $1.8 billion in assistance to Georgia through USAID. Building on this successful partnership, the U.S. Government dedicates approximately $40 million annually to 50 wide-reaching programs that support Georgia’s democratic, free-market, Western orientation.
