BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 4
By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:
With the support of the “Plant the Future” state project, a modern 30-hectare table vineyard has been set up in the Gardaban region (Kvemo Kartli region, Eastern Georgia), Trend reports referring to EastFruit portal.
The new vineyard is a joint project of six Georgian partner companies including Chumathevis Baghebi LLC, Chumathevis Venakhi LLC, Floris Kurdzeni LLC, Uva LLC, Muscati LLC and Mtevani LLC.
According to the representative of the companies Lasha Jincharadze, taking into account the recommendations of experts, four varieties were selected for cultivation: Crimson seedless, Matilde Regal, Italia and Red Globe, while seedlings were imported from Italy. The first commercial harvest from vineyards, the laying of which was completed in early April, is expected in three years.
“Imported table grapes prevail in the Georgian market. We are primarily focused on import substitution and are confident that, thanks to the quality of our products, we will successfully cope with this task. We are counting on demand not only from tourists, but also from the Georgian consumer. With increasing competition, table grapes will become more affordable for consumers at a price,” said Dzhincharadze.
The Plant the Future project is part of the Unified Agricultural Project implemented by the Agency for Rural and Agricultural Development of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
The new vineyard was visited by representatives of the ministry, regional authorities and USAID.
“This vineyard is another step forward in the production of Georgian agricultural products. Georgia is not spoiled by the production of table grapes. With government support, in 2-3 years, it will become possible to export the table grapes,” said Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Giorgi Khanishvili.
