Iran strengthens banks of Aras River

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 24

The 6.7-kilometer-long bank of the Aras River in the Poldasht County of West Azerbaijan Province (northwestern Iran) is being strengthened to prevent possible floods, Governor of Poldasht County Mehran Safari said Trend reports citing the governorship.

Safari said that it is planned to allocate 250 billion rials (about $5.9 million) funds to execute the plan. The governor added that so far, the 33-kilometer-long bank of the Aras River has been strengthened.

"Taking into account the protocols between Iran and Azerbaijan on the Aras River, the purpose of strengthening the banks of the Aras River is to protect the river delta and river villages from seasonal floods," he said.

Safari emphasized that the work in this area is expected to be completed by the end of current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020).
