Azerbaijan discloses data on gourds sowing

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 29

Around 19,250 hectares of gourds were sown in Azerbaijan during the first 5 months of 2020, which is 9 percent more compared to the same period of 2019, Head of the information support and public relations department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Vugar Huseynov told Trend.

Huseynov noted, the sowing still ongoing in the country.

“In 2019, gourds on 21,360 hectares were planted in the country, and 447,600 tons of gourds were harvested from that area. Yield per hectare averaged 209.1 centners,” added Huseynov.

“Some 55.7 percent of the production of gourds in the country accounted for Sabirabad, Saatli and Kurdamir. In Saatli and Sabirabad districts, the average yield in 2019 was over 320 centners,” the ministry’s representative said.

“The current retail price of watermelon in Baku and large cities is 0.4 manat (23 cents), melon - 0.7 manat (41 cents). In July 2019, the retail price for watermelon was 0.35 manat (20 cents), and for melon - 1 manat (58 cents),” he stressed.

“Watermelons were being imported in the winter months. However, in June and July, watermelons weren’t imported into the country,” Huseynov added.
