Azerbaijan's eight-month railway freight traffic shrinks

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.15

Azerbaijan transported 1.4 million tons of cargo by rail from January through August 2020, which is 6.7 percent less than in the same period of 2019, Trend reports on Sept.15 citing a report of the State Customs Committee (SCC).

According to the committee, over the reporting period, goods worth $292.1 million were exported from Azerbaijan by rail, which is a decrease of 40.8 percent.

Totally, Azerbaijan carried out railway cargo transportation in the amount of $1.6 billion, which is 20 percent less than in the eight months of last year.

During the reporting period, the volume of freight traffic by rail amounted to 4.5 million tons, which is 1.7 percent less than in the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, imports by rail amounted to over 3 million tons worth $1.3 billion (down 13.3 percent).

Azerbaijan's total foreign trade turnover in the past 8 months of 2020 amounted to $16.6 billion, showing a 38 percent decline compared to the same period in 2019.
