More 213 billion rials (about $5.07 million) has been paid to tea farmers in the last week due to the purchase of tea leaves in Iran, Chairman of Iran Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.
Jahansaz said that so far (until October 29), 5.13 trillion rials (about $122 million) worth of tea leaves have been purchased from farmers.
He added that about 88 percent ie 4.48 trillion rials (about $107 million) of these funds have been paid to the farmers so far. The remaining 650 billion rials (about $15.4 million) will soon be paid to the farmers.
The chairman emphasized that a total of 132,000 tons of tea leaves were purchased from farmers in the Gilan and Mazandaran provinces in northern Iran from April 20 through October 21, 2020. About 46 percent ie 60,700 tons of purchased tea leaves were 1st grade and 54 percent ie 71,000 tons were 2nd grade.
According to Jahansaz, the purchase of tea leaves increased by 4 percent in terms of volume compared to the same period last Iranian year.
The chairman noted 29,600 tons of dry tea were produced from the purchased tea leaves.
