European Union (EU) aims to support Georgian government in enhancing climate-smart agriculture practices, Trend reports via the EU.
The Climate Agriculture Working Group, which will conduct regular online sessions to address climate change challenges, has been established in Georgia with the support of the European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) under the ENPARD Program.
The working group, which consists of relevant departments from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and subordinated agencies, aims to raise awareness on climate smart agriculture and to develop a set of recommendations for the Georgian authorities to minimize climate change effects, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector.
‘’The EU and FAO have established several demonstration plots that use climate-smart, conservation agriculture methods in many Georgian regions, such as minimum and no tillage planting,” said Javier Sanz Alvarez, FAO-EU project coordinator.
According to him, the promotion of modern approaches within agriculture is crucial to support the global struggle against climate change, and goes hand in hand with the revival of Georgian agriculture, bringing more income to Georgian farmers, while reducing the impact on the environment and reducing input costs.
The EU is supporting agriculture and rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD program, implemented since 2013 with a total budget of 234.5 million euros.
