Iran aims to reach self-sufficiency in cotton industry

Iran will be self-sufficient in cotton industry in 4 years, according to the plan for cotton production in Iran, the executor of the cotton plan of Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran, Ebrahim Hezarjaribi told reporters, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The official noted that Iran produced 80,000 tons of cotton fiber and imported 70,000 tons of cotton fiber over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).

Hezarjaribi added that Iran plans to produce 100,000 tons of cotton fiber in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022). This means an increase of 21 percent, compared to the preceding year.

“The cotton is planted on a total of 115,000 hectares of land in 18 provinces of Iran in the current Iranian year, and 327,000 tons of raw cotton is projected to be harvested,” he said.

The official stressed that Iran's Ministry of Agriculture Jihad plans to increase cotton planting. According to the plan, the area under cotton in Iran will increase by 16 percent in the current Iranian year. Thus, it is planned to harvest 327,000 tons of raw cotton in Iran this year.

According Hezarjaribi, Iran's demand for cotton in the textile sector increased from 120,000 tons to 150,000 tons.

As reported, 270,000 tons of raw cotton were harvested in Iran over last Iranian year. About 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were produced from it. About 80,000 tons of cotton out of 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were supplied to the country's textile industry. Iran's textile industry needs 120,000 tons of cotton a year.
