BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 18. Iran's rice imports decreased by 66 percent in value and 52 percent in volume, during the first month of the current Iranian year (March 21 through April 20, 2023), compared to the same month in the last year, Trend reports via the statistics of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).
According to IRICA, Iran imported a total of 77,900 tons of rice worth approximately $91.7 million for the 1st month.
Meanwhile, in the same month of the last Iranian year, Iran’s rice imports amounted to about 164,000 tons worth approximately $271 million.
Within the 1st month, Iran imported 41,300 tons of rice worth $46.3 million from India, 30,800 tons worth $37.6 million from Pakistan, 2,060 tons worth $2.63 million from the UAE, and 3,800 tons worth $5.1 million from other countries.
Overall, Iran imported 1.83 million tons of goods worth $3.08 billion for the 1st month. The imports decreased by 13 percent in value and 24.8 percent in volume compared to the same month in the last year.
Reportedly, Iranian rice farmers want the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad to reduce rice imports so that they can sell their own rice in the local market. On average, 2 million tons of rice are produced in Iran per year.
