Iran faces drop in catch of bony fish in Caspian Sea

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 9. The volume of bony fish caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran fell by 8 percent over the past 81 days (October 17 through January 5, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.

The deputy chairman noted that 1,283 tons of bony fish were caught in the Caspian Sea in the specified period.

During 81 days, Iran caught 560 tons of trout, 527 tons of mullet, 171 tons of carp, and 25 tons of other fish from the Caspian Sea, Naderi said.

He also mentioned that, compared to the same period last year, trout fishing rose by 38 percent, carp fishing grew by 85 percent, and mullet fishing dropped by 40 percent.

Iran catches bony fish from the Caspian Sea in the waters of Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan provinces. Last season (October 9, 2022 through March 30, 2023), 6,000 tons of bony fish were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran.

At present, 347 cooperatives are engaged in fishing in the north and south of the country. There are 136,000 fishermen operating in the north and south of Iran. About 9,500 of them are engaged in fishing in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, and the remaining 126,500 people are engaged in fishing in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south of the country.
