Business Materials 7 November 2006 14:20 (UTC +04:00)

Baku Metro appealed to the Tariff Council of Azerbaijan with a new proposal to increase the price of metro fares, Trend reports. The Tariff Council is presently considering this request. The decision to increase the price is an easy one, but it should be in line with passenger transportation prices. Therefore it is impossible to make a final decision within a week, the Chairman of the Tariff Council, the Minister of Economic Development, Heydar Babayev, stated.

According to him, work is being implemented in this direct ion and monitoring is held.

Previously the Minister stated that the Tariff Council did not plan to increase the prices of the Baku Metro until the end of the year.

Irrespective of the significant difference between the prices of metro and bus fares, we will not discuss the tariffs in 2007. But we take into consideration that the metro is used by the less privileged of the population, Babayev said. At the same time, he stressed that with the present prices, it is impossible to raise the quality of the metro service, allocate investments to renew the trains and even pay salaries to the employees. The State subsidizes the Baku Metro through the State Budget to resolve these problems.
