Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. U.Ismayilova / Most of the agriculture produced in Azerbaijan is genetically modified (GM), which prevents a variety of agricultural products, Eyyub Huseyinov, the head of the Free Consumers Union, stated on 17 August.
Huseyinov noted that about 18 kinds of watermelon were planted in Azerbaijan eight years ago, however, only one kind of watermelon is being planted now.
Monitoring held by the Union has revealed that more than 80% of plant oils of the consumer market of Azerbaijan are genetically produced, about 90% chips and 70% potatoes, which are also genetically modified.
The Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) has submitted the bill on 'Ecologically pure agriculture' to the Union.
The Union has already proposed to Parliament to ban the import of genetically modified products to the country. The issue will be discussed at Parliament's Autumn session.
