Contract on Construction of Waste Processing Plant to be Signed late 2007

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend U.Ismayilova / The Azerbaijan Government plans to sign

a contract on the construction of a waste processing plant in Azerbaijan by the end of the year, Heydar Babayev, the Azerbaijani Minister for Economic Development, said on 7 September.

"Talks on the construction of the plant are at the final stage. The consultants are developing a project, under which the Ministry will receive a definite sum of money from the Cabinet of Ministers for the second stage of construction," Babayev said.

The Minister promised to organize absolute transparency during the tender.

The Finnish company Poyri is assessing the proposals for the Ministry of Economic Development of Azerbaijan. Proposals were submitted by the Japanese company EBARA, the Australian company EVN, and the French company CNIM.

Some companies are proposing waste incineration while others to construct a recycling facility in order to reuse paper waste. The budget of the project will depend on the proposals and technology to be involved in the construction. In the initial stage it is planned to construct one garbage processing plant in Baku.

Consultants are currently discussing the terms.

Subsequently the consultant company will conduct preliminary research on the volumes of domestic waste produced in the Absheron Peninsula and Baku.

According to the official data, 775,000t of domestic waste is collected annually within Baku and its suburbs.
