The selection of a route and project for Azerbaijani gas to Europe will be strategic in nature, a senior representative at the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) reported.

He said the creation of a transmission infrastructure from Azerbaijan to the Turkish border, and the option to construct a pipeline from Turkey to Europe, is being assessed not only given the transportation of Shah Deniz gas. Azerbaijan is considering options which will allow transport of natural gas from other fields, particularly Umid and Absheron, as well as transporting possible volumes from Babak's prospective structures, deep-bed gas from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) fields, and other sources.

"We cannot lay a gas pipeline for each field. Estimating projects, we are evaluating creating a pipeline infrastructure to transport natural gas in the long-term perspective," the source said.

Gas produced at the Shah Deniz-2 is considered to be the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor. Under the Shah Deniz-2 project, Azerbaijan plans to ship 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe.

Today, Azerbaijan's proven gas reserves are estimated at 2.2 trillion cubic meters, but after ascertaining the amount of gas reserves on the Absheron field, the figure may reach 2.55 trillion cubic meters.
