Kazakhstan maintains an interest in the project "Kazakhstan Caspian Transportation System" (KCTS) to transport oil from "Kashagan" field on the Caspian sea in the future, director general of the Kazakh oil transportation company "KazTransOil" Kairgeldy Kabyldin said at a press conference in Astana today.

He added that at present, no active operations are being conducted on the "Kazakhstan Caspian Transportation System" project as there are still uncertainties on the second and third phases of "Kashagan" field development.

Kazakhstan Caspian Transportation System (KCTS) is an integrated system designed to transport Kazakh oil, mainly, from "Tengiz" and "Kashagan" fields to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and other transportation systems to the international markets.

KCTS consists of the Eskene-Kuryk oil pipeline with a line from "Tengiz", which is designed to transport crude oil from "Eskene" and "Tengiz" to the oil terminal at Kuryk on the Kazakh coast of the Caspian Sea, as well as the Trans-Caspian system.

The Trans-Caspian system is designed for offshore oil transportation from Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan across the Caspian Sea to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and includes oil terminal on the Kazakh coast, tankers and vessels, a terminal on the Azerbaijani coast and connecting facilities to the Baku-Tbilisi -Ceyhan pipeline.

The Trans-Caspian transportation infrastructure can also be partially used to transport oil via other transportation routes.
