The first limited exploration drilling has begun at the Yalda well in east of the Iran-Qatar joint South Pars gas field (this field is called North Dome in Qatar) last day (April 18), said Ali Akbar Majed, Director of Petroleum and Gas Engineering Department of Pars Oil and Gas Company, Trend reports citing official website of the organization.

According to Majed, protection of production at the South Pars gas field and use of existing infrastructure especially in order to use the additional potential of the 12th phase of the field development project, discovering hydrocarbons around the field is on the agenda.

Majed added that the purpose of drilling the first well in this area is to discover oil deposits and determine the Kangan and Dalan gas reserves.

The South Pars gas field is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field have reached 51 trillion cubic meters of gas (36 trillion extractable). At present, Iran's daily gas production from the South Pars gas field is more than 700 million cubic meters.

Around 75 percent of Iran's gas is supplied by this field.

Gas from Iran's South Pars gas field is transported to refineries in the Pars Special Energy Economic Zone in the port city of Asaluyeh in Iran's southern Bushehr province via a pipeline.

The Kangan gas field is located near the city of Kangan in Iran's Bushehr province. It is reported that the field produces 52 million cubic meters of gas and 16,000 barrels of gas condensate per day.

Iran's Dalan gas field is located in the southwestern of Shiraz city of Fars province. It is reported that 20 million cubic meters of gas and 5,500 barrels of gas condensate is produced daily from this field.
